Saliva is produced by glands which secrete into the mouth upon stimulation. It keeps the oral tissues moist and healthy, and has a major role in mastication and swallowing.

Saliva Ejector Dental tool which is attached to the low volume aspirator. Aids the patient’s comfort by reducing the need to spit out or swallow.

Scale and polish Procedure which removes plaque and calculus from the teeth and gum margins. Often done every six months by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Sinusitis Infection of the sinus. If  affecting the maxillary sinuses may cause pain which appears to be toothache.

Spacing is due to missing teeth, small teeth or large jaws. If occurring later in life, ma y indicate periodontitis.

Splint Device which may be similar to a mouthguard or may be made of hard acrylic which reduces attrition of the teeth during bruxism. May also help with tension headaches or migraines in people who clench their teeth.

Splinting is a means of increasing tooth support by joining to an adjacent tooth or teeth.

Sterilization Procedure whereby bacteria and viruses are eliminated from tools, surfaces and equipment to prevent cross infection. Instruments are sterilized in an autoclave.

Suture Used to hold flaps and tissue in the correct position as they heal. Most dental sutures will require to be removed some time after the procedure.

Supernumerary tooth An extra tooth which may cause crowding. May be the cause of a midline diastema if unerupted.
