FERGUSON FAMILY

The earliest records to date are of Daniel / Donald Ferguson alias Gow who was married to Elizabeth Brydie. They may have been born 1751 +/- 10 years. Both from the Muthill area of Perthshire, it was their son, Daniel who moved to Newmilns with his profession as a weaving agent.

Daniel married Jean Ronald, daughter of Matthew Ronald and Jean Brown who would both have been born 1761+/- 10 years.

Daniel Ferguson and Jean Ronald had five known children.

Agnes was born around 1830 and married John Morton and had sons William and Alec who were involved in the Lace Mills of Darvel. Agnes is recorded on the 1851 census as being and assistant milliner.

Kate married a Mr Fulton.

Barbara was born in 1818 and died 1891. Barbara married Hugh Wagstaff. More details of this family are known- with living descendants known.

Janet was born on 02/04/1820, was recorded as a hand loom weaver in 1851 and married James Steel on October 5th 1854. Their family can be found in the STEEL FAMILY. She died in 1891.

William was born around 1828 and was recorded in the 1851 census as being a hand loom weaver.

 

Madge Gow recalled: “A son who is known to have emigrated to Pittsburg in the USA. A son or daughter who emigrated to Toronto in Canada.”
