GENERAL ANAESTHESIA (GA) - click here for more information.

SEDATION is widely used as a means of reducing anxiety during dental procedures.

‘Sedation’ was defined by the Wylie Report (1978) as ‘a technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system’. Verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation and it is therefore known as ‘conscious sedation’.

There are three main types of conscious sedation in dentistry: INHALATION, ORAL and INTRAVENOUS.
