STEEL FAMILY

The earliest found record to date of the STEEL family is the death certificate of WILLIAM STEEL (married to Isabella Connell). His parents, WILLIAM STEEL and JEAN PATON were probably born 1767 +/- 10 years.

William’s spouse, ISABELLA CONNELL was born 1799 +/- 1 year. Her parents JAMES CONNELL and JANE BROWN would have probably been born 1769 +/- 10 years.

Isabella had two known brothers. Firstly- James who would have been born around 1797. His death certificate shows that at his time of death, his mother was still alive. The certificate for Robert below shows that his mother was deceased by 1874. Jane/Jean Brown may therefore be traced by her death certificate which should be found between 1861 and 1874.

To date three children of William Steel and Isabella Connell are known:

1. James, born 1821+/- 1 year

2. Matthew, born 1822 +/- 1 year

3. Annie.

4. Jean, christened 11 AUG 1822

 

Matthew (Madge Gow recalls him being referred to as uncle Matte.) married Anne Surgeoner (born 26/09/1821, daughter of George born 1794 in Ireland, and Jean Tennock) on 02/01/1871 in Ayr. He was christened on 04/01/1829. Anne was a widow, already having a large family.

Annie married John (or William?) Morton. One son, Dr William Morton is known of. Dr William is known to have lived at one time in Stepps.

Our line continues through James. James Steel and Janet Ferguson married on April 7th 1854. Janet’s tree can be found on the Ferguson Family section.

James would have been born around 1821.

Jean: Marriage Certificate, 593/000 017. Joseph was a Widower on the Marriage Cert. Home address was Main Street, Newmilns, Loudoun. Only his mother Ann Bulger was alive when he married. Witness were Willaim Morton & Annie Steel. Joseph is down as 57 years old and Jean Steel is 53.

Cause: Chronic bronchitis 4 years. Cardiac syncope 1 day. (Case of sudden death)

Janet was born on the 2nd of April 1820.

Cause: Age, diarrhoea 4 days, collapse 4days.

Age: 71

Spouse: James Steel, Handloom weaver.

Father: Daniel Ferguson, weaving agent. (Deceased)

Mother: Jean Ferguson nee Ronald. (Deceased)

Informant: Daniel F. Steel, son.

Reg: 9th March 1891.

James and Janet Steel had five children:

James is known to have emigrated to the USA.

William married Alice Loudon (who was a real character as recalled by Madge Gow). They had several children: John, who was a grocer in Newmilns and had children William (known to have lived in Kilmarnock) and Nanna. Bob and Alec moved to London. Mary stayed in Newmilns. Jenny married a Semple and emigrated to Cleveland, USA. Finally Alice, who is also known to have emigrated to USA.

Jean (Jeannie) married William McBean and had several children. William who married Ella from Tain and had a son, Billy. James who moved to Toronto and married Kate Blair. John who moved to Salcoats and possibly married an Ella. Dr Daniel (Dan) who married Jean Whitson and had 2 sons. Finally Robert married Annie Hendry.

Daniel married Christina McPhail and had children Dr James, Dr Janet and Margaret. Much of the recent family tree information was passed on by Dr Janet Ferguson before she died to Madge Gow. Dr Janet who never married was very proud of her Ferguson heritage. Her father Daniel had a provisions store in Dennistoun for several years.

Our line comes down through Alexander who married Jean (Jeannie) McDougall. Alexander was born on 20/08/1864. Jean McDougall’s family tree can be found in the McDOUGALL FAMILY.

Alexander (age 28 of 10 Edward St, Glasgow) and Jean (age 23 or 4 Catherine St, Glasgow) married on 21st Feb 1893 in St Rollox parish.
